Tromios

Place of Origin: Phyrozes
Type: Appetizer

“The Halcord Nagor Ardeyi once freaked out due to lack of Tromios served in a royal banquet that he nearly fired the foolish head chef – after all, what is a banquet without a bowl of Tromios in each table?”

-Sanaras Alhadyr, the Castellan of God’s Chosen.

Tromios is something that all children of Phyrozes know and love. You can find it anywhere in The Empire; from street food stall to royal banquets. Easy to make, filling, and tasty – a true Phyrozesathur classic.
The garnish differ from one city to another, but they put fermented fish eggs in Storm Chimes, tartar sauce in Sky Fort, scallions in Whistlewind… It really depends on your preferences, which makes it fun! Below is the recipe to serve one person.

What you need:
INGREDIENTS
4 (four) ruthigi eggs
3 (three) cloves of garlic
1 (one) tablespoon of honey
1 (one) tablespoon of soy sauce
1/2 (half) a tablespoon of salt
1/2 (half) a tablespoon of brown sugar
1 (one) onion
2 (two) star anise
a few black peppercorns, crushed
Approximately 200 ml of water
Topping of your choice
EQUIPMENTS
A pot
A knife
A chopping board
Some water (for boiling the eggs)
A pretty bowl to serve your Tromios in

It’s that easy!
Steps
  • Pour some water to the pot and bring to boil. Optional – I like to just sprinkle the water with some salt.
  • After the water is boiling, add your ruthigi eggs and boil for about 6-8 minutes.
  • Take your freshly-boiled ruthigi eggs out and put it aside.
  • Chop the onion into long vertical shapes.
  • Crush and dice your garlic.
  • Crush your black peppercorns. I usually just crush it manually with my own knife. Us Venefian believes it let out the pepper oil better than using peppercorn grinder.
  • Throw the old water you used to boil the ruthigi eggs out. Or store it until it’s cool and pour it to your plants! Plants love the calcium in the water we use to boil ruthigi eggs. Yum!
  • Pour 200 ml water into the pot, bring to simmer.
  • Add onions and garlic, along with all the spices mentioned.
  • Peel the boiled eggs, cut it to half, and place it in the pot flat side down.
  • Wait until the sauce thickens for 8-10 minutes.
  • Serve it on a bowl and add your favorite garnish! Mine is shredded taima fish.

Tromios, to me, taste like home and childhood. They are quite popular, with market stalls selling Tromios on banana leaves with bone sticks. You can find it in markets, taverns, and banquets… but why not make your own with your own garnish once in a while? And if you’re courting a Traxei, this would make a fine gift. Remember: The quickest way to get to a Traxei’s heart is through their stomach!
